Frequently asked questions

Do marten defence devices drain car batteries? or “Ever since the marten defence device was installed, the car’s battery is always dead”.

Fact:
STOP&GO marten defence products are not able to noticeably drain car batteries. Modern vehicles often have many items requiring electricity (even in standby mode), so it may be the case that, depending on the make and fittings, the battery is weakened after the car has been parked for a few weeks. If an additional STOP&GO marten defence device is installed, the time for a noticeable discharge to occur is reduced by a few hours.

The factory-installed 0.5A fuse naturally does not allow the power consumption to exceed 0.5 amps. Besides, STOP&GO devices only require 0.0004 to 0.020A, which is of no consequence to conventional car batteries. By way of comparison, two button batteries are enough to operate the STOP&GO high-voltage marten defence device for around 18 months.

So what is it? What’s the problem?
It can be assumed that the connection (usually a number 30 or 15 terminal) was chosen incorrectly. In modern CAN/data bus technology, like in BMSs (battery management systems), it may be the case that upon removal (even of a very low current) at an “unfavourable point”, a control device does not switch to sleep (power-saving) mode. This can cause excessive power consumption. The cause of the drainage is therefore the electrical connection. Understandably, this is not covered under the guarantee or warranty, especially since changing the connection will solve the problem.

Fazit:
Modern technology is becoming ever more elaborate and complex, even for professionals. A simple and pioneering solution is always independent of the on-board power supply! For example:

  • The STOP&GO battery-operated high-voltage device 8 PLUS-MINUS runs completely independently of the on-board power supply for around 18 months per battery set.
  • The STOP&GO battery-operated ultrasound device type 4B works with the supplied 3V button batteries, fully independently of the power supply, for around two years.
  • The STOP&GO battery-operated ultrasound device works with the supplied AA batteries, fully independently of the power supply, for around one year.
  • STOP&GO scent discs have an active time of at least 6 to 8 months.
  • STOP&GO marten repellent spray lasts 4 to 6 weeks per spray application, after which new spray must be applied. One can is enough for more than a year.

Thanks to the high-quality technology used, STOP&GO products have an extremely low power consumption, comparable with that of an analogue clock on the dashboard. This means that the car remains protected from marten attacks even during long holidays, without the battery noticeably running down.

Why is there no voltage monitor / automatic cut-out?
As explained above, the possible saving potential is very low. A battery that is too weak to start the engine will still be enough to keep the STOP&GO marten defence device running for weeks or even months. Marten protection, and thus prevention of resulting damage, takes priority! It is much more sensible and cost-effective to bypass or recharge a battery that is already empty than it is to fix any expensive marten damage. There is also the possibility of keeping the vehicle battery fit and healthy with a “continuous charger”. This requires that you have a 220-volt connection near the vehicle.

When frequently leaving the car parked for long times, we recommend:

We get requests for marten repellent products for other areas of application than car engine compartments almost on a daily basis.

In the interior of a house, for example in the loft, however, the conditions are completely different from those in an engine compartment. Above all, the size of the space, which is usually much larger, represents a problem. Often, high-voltage devices cannot be positioned in such a way that the marten is guaranteed to come into contact with them. And the ultrasound devices designed for car engine compartments with one or two speakers cannot usually guarantee sufficient protection. Due to the physical characteristics of ultrasound, and the fact that it cannot penetrate materials, so-called acoustic shadows are created, where the animal can move about undisturbed. The effective range of the ultrasound, which is limited to 3 to 5 metres in an open space, also makes it difficult to completely fill a room with sound with just one speaker. To sufficiently fill a room with sound, several speakers are therefore required.

To offer you effective marten protection for your house, garage or similar rooms, we have designed an ultrasound marten repellent system that has been in use successfully, including in lofts, for around two years now. The system consists of 5 battery-operated ultrasound devices with batteries included. To ensure continuous protection, the batteries must be changed once a year (AA alkaline). Our experience with the approx. 500 devices we have sold so far has been very positive.

The ultrasound in all our ultrasound devices simulates an animal’s cry of fear for the marten and is very unpleasant to its ears in the frequency emitted, causing it to flee, but without causing injury. This sound is hardly perceptible to the human ear, which means that only very sensitive ears can hear the slight crackling or beeping sound.

A simpler solution is to use our STOP&GO marten spray. Marking points are taped or laid down at intervals of approx. 2 to 4 metres and sprayed with it. An absorbent material is best for this, such as the felt scent tanks supplied with the spray or a household sponge cloth (the amount of scent tanks supplied is often not enough for large rooms).

Warning! The product has a very strong smell which most people find unpleasant (similar to the smell of sweat). The intense smell then decreases significantly after a few hours, after which it is only slightly noticeable. It is therefore not recommended for use in rooms that are occupied or in use.

The operating principle of the scent spray is the same in rooms as it is in vehicles: the marten smells its natural enemy (such as dogs or foxes), which means it detects danger and looks for somewhere else that is “less dangerous”. Depending on the size and ventilation of the storage space, you may need to renew the spray in shorter or longer intervals (5 – 6 weeks). You’ll have the best success if you can find the hole where the marten gains access and place the countermeasures directly there. After all, it is more difficult to fill a large space with sound or mark it with scents than it is to do this in a relatively small entrance hole or the engine compartment of a car.

Depending on the model, our high-voltage and ultrasound devices have the following technical specifications:

  • Frequency: 16 – 32 kHz
  • Output voltage: 250 – 400 V
  • Operating voltage: 12 V or battery-driven
  • Power consumption: 0,4 – 25 mA (including after short circuit)
  • Volume/sound pressure: approx. ca. 90 – 120 dB

High-voltage device installation

The device and contact plates are fixed in the upper third of the engine compartment using cable ties (alternatively, it is also possible to screw or stick it on).

In protected places in the upper third of the engine compartment, so that the contact plates are protected from standing dirt (mud or snow), as this could cause a short circuit or the insulating socket to be bridged.

These do not need to be the places where the marten passes when it enters, but rather the place where it stays.

Ultrasound device installation

In principle, the sound emission from a marten repellent device is similar to the light emission from a torch. Install the device so that it can fill as much space as possible with sound. When doing so, bear in mind that, just like rays of light, the ultrasound waves cannot penetrate any objects.

Our high-quality piezo-calotte speakers have an emission angle of 160°, almost a semicircle. The sound needs to be able to escape as freely and unobstructed as possible. You may need to point the device downwards to catch the marten as soon as it enters.

There is no evidence of negative reactions in other species of animal to our marten repellent products. According to scientific publications, however, most small animals are sensitive to the same basic substances. The ingredients in our products may be effective repellents for other small animals, although it is not certain whether or not our scent-based products are effective against rats and mice.

Likewise, most other animals react to ultrasound in the same way as martens – they try to avoid it because they find it unpleasant. However, our high-voltage devices with ultrasound are an even more reliable defence against other small animals. These work according to three different systems, the most effective of which is the high-voltage electric fence principle.

Martens are covered by protected species laws and are therefore protected all year round. Non-professionals are not permitted to hunt them or catch them with traps. In addition, the chances of successfully catching a marten are very low.

However, if you do want or need to catch a marten, contact your nearest local ranger or forestry office. They may lend you a trap and pick the animal up from you so that they can release it elsewhere (e.g. in the forest). In any case, it is important to use a cage trap which will not harm the animal.

The stone marten (Martes foina), is a species of the marten family, which also includes the weasel and the polecat. It is a wild animal and a predator. Martens are solitary animals that defend their territory. They are usually active from March to October, but this can stretch to all year depending on the weather conditions and temperature. Their mating season is during high summer, and their young are then born in April or May after a gestation period of nine months. The female can give birth to a litter of between two and seven offspring. The young are then independent at the age of three months.

Martens prefer warm places and are very inquisitive and playful, which can sometimes cause noises in the loft that can get on humans’ nerves. Whilst the growing youngsters are still having fun in the spring and early summer, this is quickly followed by the mating season in August.

The marten is an omnivore and is about the size of a young, skinny cat. It mostly feeds on small mammals, birds, insects, fruit, nuts as well as almost everything it can find in an urban environment, including household waste. It is a so-called “synanthrope”, which means one of its lifestyle habits is adapting to civilisation (like pigeons, foxes and rats). It lives in barns and farm buildings, or, if accessible, in lofts, garages and the like. Due to having limited natural enemies, overpopulation is gradually becoming an issue in certain areas of central Europe.

As a nocturnal animal, the marten has an extremely strong sense of smell and hearing, especially just before and during the mating season. To find its way and to mark its territory, it uses gland secretions as well as urine and faeces to leave scent marks in the places it visits. A female’s territory spans approximately 12 to 150 hectares , whilst the male’s can be up to twice as large, but overlapping with at least one female’s territory. Abandoned territories are reoccupied, usually by young animals, and territorial wars are fought to defend existing territories from these young animals and from relocated martens. Vehicles bearing external scent marks from other marten territories stimulate the marten’s defence instinct.

Until just a few years ago, martens were mainly indigenous to the south of Germany. However, there is now a rapidly increasing amount of marten damage occurring all over Germany, proving that martens have long since reached the north and other countries bordering Germany.

In general, any car can fall victim to marten damage.
According to a study by the GDV (German Insurance Association), the marten has a “hit list” for preferred vehicle types and parts.

Household remedies are, at best, only effective by chance or for a short time. After detecting traces of martens, it is very important to wash out the engine, but that alone is not enough. However, this should be a prerequisite before taking any other measures – alternatively, you can also use STOP&GO scent mark remover.

Examples of household remedies:

Alarm
Dog hair
Cola
Urine
Borax
Adhesive grease
Flashing light
Grate
Wire mesh
Mothballs (naphthalene)
Garlic
Toilet block
Change of location
Constantly switching between various household remedies
Car wash (very important, but not enough on its own. This should be a prerequisite before undertaking any other measures).
  1. Yes, all STOP&GO marten defence products come with 48 months’ proper function guaranteed
  2. Yes, STOP&GO scent discs are packaged in film and can be stored for a minimum of 24 months, just like STOP&GO marten spray.
  3. In terms of their effects, the scent or repellent products are similar to medications: they have a definitive effect which can be proven, however it cannot be guaranteed. In this respect, we don’t provide guarantees, but rather success rates. Martens are a part of nature. They don’t lend themselves to mathematical predictions. Nevertheless, we can offer success rates of nearly 100%, depending on the product. This is especially true of our high-voltage devices, which work like a high-voltage electric fence according to the principle of “he who will not hear (or smell) must feel”.

This goes without saying!

We have been working exclusively with fully encapsulated electronics and waterproof speakers for decades now, and as a result, our devices are automatically waterproof. Vibration and corrosion are also not a problem for our devices.

The new, more compact devices in the Slimline series are certified as dust- and water-resistant under IP65.
